The La Cangreja National Park is a protected wilderness area with an area of 2509 hectares. It includes numerous rivers, fresh springs, waterfalls, exotic and unique flora and fauna. There is a annual bird count and numerous hiking trails and swimming opportunities to explore!

La Iguana Chocolate

La Iguana Chocolate is a Costa Rican family owned business. They are experts in the bean-to-bar experience, as they have over 35 years of experience farming cacao. In fact, they just won a top place of best chocolate in Costa Rica! They offer hands-on chocolate tours and delicious chocolate and cacao products.

Finca Siempre Verde is a Costa Rican family owned business. Both Marcos and Jenni are life long Mastatal community members and amazing certified nature guides. They offer informative guided rainforest tours (specializing in birds, waterfalls, and nighttime tours). This is a great option to stay the night.

It is owned by a Costa Rican family. They also manage the Juco Wildlife Refuge where Las Gemelas (the twins) Waterfalls is located.

Basketweaving in Zapatón Indigenous Reserve: 
 
Share stories and make baskets with a family in Zapatón. Lunch is optional.  Transportation required or extra cost.  



Guided Night Hike:
 
1-2 hours. Take a guided hike through the jungle after dark! You may catch a glimpse of the many nocturnal animals that you don’t see during the daylight hours. Guide necessary. Easy. 


 

"Trapiche" or Traditional Sugar Cane Mill:  

 

Visit the neighboring town of San Miguel. A local family still operates an antique sugar mill ("trapiche") powered by oxen. Transportation required or extra cost. 

La Piedra Summit Hike: 


Climb to the summit of La Cangreja National Park, the highest point in the area. Experience primary and secondary forests and almost 360 degree views, including the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding countryside. Bring extra water. Guide necessary. Moderate to strenuous. 5 hours. 

Birdwatching: 

Take an early morning guided birdwatching walk to see and learn about the 500+ bird species found in our area.
